Alex Lanier Falls in Quarterfinals of Guwahati Masters, Ending Hopes of Fourth Consecutive Semifinal

There will be no fourth consecutive semifinal for Alex Lanier. The Strasbourg resident, 45th in the world in singles, fell this Friday morning in the quarter-finals of the Guwahati Masters (India), a World Tour Super 100 tournament. The 2022 European junior champion lost to the Indonesian Alvi Wijaya Chairullah, 206th (21-19, 11-21, 17-21), who was not on his first try, since he had ousted the experienced Indian Sameer Verma, 91st, in the previous round, but 11th – his best ranking – in 2019.

Unlike his first two matches of the week, the postman, bronze medalist at the last junior world championships, did not experience a delay in starting and won a tight first round. But he then failed to maintain his level of play and despite a last stand in the decisive third set, from 7-15 to 15-16, he had to admit defeat after saving a match shuttlecock. His elimination, in principle, puts an end to his stay in India: he should give up playing there next week in another Super 100 in Cuttack.
