Ahmet Gürleyen: The Roller Coaster Ride of His First Season at FCN

His first season at the club was a lot of ups and downs!

Central defender Ahmet Gürleyen (24) came from newly promoted SV Wehen Wiesbaden on a free transfer before the season and surprisingly quickly fought his way into the first team at FCN. But a red card on matchday 4 against his former club (2-1) and further failures (including Braunschweig) meant that Gürleyen often had to go to the bench.

In Elversberg (1-0), the robust defender (nicknamed “Panzer”) once again showed a decent game from the start (BILD grade 3), closing the defensive center with Florian Hübner (32) after conceding eleven goals in three games.

Gürleyen: “We’ve had to listen to a lot in the last few weeks, especially us defenders. How shitty everything was at the back and why we conceded so many goals. We lost games, but that’s part of it. What’s important is how we prove ourselves against it.”

Also applies to Gürleyen! The Berlin native has a lot to offer to be a good central defender in the second division. He is fast (up to 35.3 km/h), good in the air and in duels (win rate 69.6 and 65.1 percent respectively). If only there weren’t these defensive blunders again and again…

Sometimes a tank, sometimes a mistake: can Gürleyen now get consistency?
