A 20-year-old young man was reported in Catania for being in possession of a baseball bat, brass knuckles and various burglary tools. The police surprised him last night in via Mascagni, in the Picanello district. The patrol intervened at 3 am, following a report received by 112, the single emergency number: someone had seen a person messing around next to a motorbike parked on the pavement. The motorbike did not suffer any damage.
The carabinieri, having arrived on site, began to search the area, finding, right next to a Moto Guzzi, a dark-coloured Fiat Panda with a man dressed in black with the hood of his sweatshirt raised on board, who hastily started to move away as soon as the gazelle appeared and approached. The driver of the car, realizing from the rear-view mirror of the service car that he was following him, increased his speed to escape the control of the soldiers, who instead continued to chase him up to Viale Africa, where the patrol managed to cut him off. , forcing him to stop the march.
The young man was identified as follows: from Catania, he was already known to the police due to previous judicial affairs. He was thus searched, as was his car. Inside the vehicle, behind the driver’s seat, the wooden baseball bat approximately 80 cm long was recovered, while the iron knuckles was found in the glove compartment of the driver’s side dashboard. In the side pocket of the door, the police then found an iron artefact, specifically designed to force locks and cylinders, as well as pliers with a red handle, a red and black screwdriver and an iron crowbar about 40 cm long. At that point, as these were burglary tools, a second patrol was sent again to via Mascagni, to check the condition of the motorbike, which had actually not suffered any damage, since the intervention of the gazelle had put the young man to flight before he could could carry out the theft.
The military went to check more closely the car used by the criminal, which turned out to be totally altered. In detail, it emerged that the plates affixed to the car did not belong to that vehicle, but to another Fiat Panda registered in 2022. Furthermore, the chassis number printed on the bodywork, inside the boot compartment of the vehicle, was found to be counterfeited so that it was not readable. The car and the objects found were seized by the military, who reported the 20-year-old for unjustified possession of altered keys or lock picks, carrying weapons or objects capable of offending and receiving stolen goods.
The patrol’s intervention is part of the strengthening of the controls arranged with the Serene Christmas operation organized by the provincial command of Catania.
