Yanis Beau-Djellel: From Montrouge to Lille – A rising star’s journey

For the French national U19 championship match between Montrouge and LOSC, DZfoot went to meet Yanis Beau-Djellel. The Lille striker of Algerian origin was back in the Paris region to face his former club and gave us an interview.

DZfoot: What are your impressions after your return to the field of your previous club?

Yanis Beau-Djellel : It made me happy to play against my former teammates. We are a little disappointed with the result (2-2, Editor’s note), we would have liked to win but I’m still happy.

You’ve had a very good start to the season (currently 7 goals in 12 games, 6 on the day of the interview), you made an assist today, how do you feel in this LOSC team?

I feel pretty good, I get along well with my teammates in the game. Despite everything, I can still do better, score more and make more assists. I’m going to keep working and hang in there.

Let’s go back, where did you grow up and start playing football? What is your training path?

I grew up in the 14th arrondissement of Paris, I started playing football at the age of 6 at the PUC club (Paris University Club, Editor’s note), I then went to Paris Alésia, in my neighborhood at Porte d’Orléans at the age of 10. It was for my year in U14 that I went to Montrouge, before going to the training center in Troyes in U16 and returning to Montrouge in U17. I signed for Lille last year.

When did you think about joining a professional club and seeing that you had the qualities to do so?

At first I didn’t think about it. But when I saw that in U14 I started trying out for clubs, I told myself that I had potential and that football could become something serious. That’s when I got really into it.

Do you come from a family involved in the world of football?

No not at all. They didn’t know this environment before I played in a professional club, that’s when they became interested and started to really follow me.

How did you sign for Troyes?

I went to do tests while they were being prepared during the summer vacation for 2 weeks. They liked it and I continued the pre-season with them. Unfortunately there were small problems and I returned to Montrouge.

What are your impressions of your time there?

This can only be positive. Even if it didn’t go very well, it’s a life test that can only enrich me.

In what state of mind do you return to Montrouge?

I immediately wanted to find a professional club, therefore a competitive mindset. I was very focused on what I was doing.

“During my 2nd season in U18 R1, I had an incredible start to the season with 16 goals in 9 championship matches” Yanis Beau-Djellel

We’re going to focus a little on this second visit to Montrouge, a season in U17 and half a season in U18, how did it go?

I arrived at the national U17s, I had a pretty good season where I scored 6 or 7 goals. It was during my 2nd season in U18 R1 that I had an incredible start to the season with 16 goals in 9 championship matches, plus a few goals in the Gambardella Cup or Paris Cup. So great start to the season.

What changed between your year in U17 and U18, we see that statistically there is a big difference, did you have a breakthrough?

In U17 I didn’t think about scoring all the time whereas in U18 I did. I don’t really know how it happened, but since then I’ve been thinking more about the goal and scoring more.

You joined LOSC in January 2023 in the off-season, how did that go?

I did tests in Lille for a week and they really liked my performances. I joined them directly.

We discussed your background, now let’s move on to your profile, how would you describe yourself in the field?

I am a striker who likes to play in spaces, to go deep. I have a good finish too.

Have you progressed to different positions during your training?

In Troyes I played on the wings, right winger or left winger. Otherwise in all the clubs before, I always played at the forefront.

What are your strengths and areas for improvement for you?

My strengths are speed, power, finishing and sense of goal. For my weak points, I’m not yet very good at the game, I have to work on my first touch of the ball and sometimes look more at the game and the solutions available to me.

Let’s now move on to the part dedicated to Algeria, where are you from?

I am from Hadjadj, 40 kilometers from Mostaganem.

What is your relationship with Algeria?

I am attached to it and have gone there several times on vacation.

Do you follow the national team?

Yes obviously, it’s my country of origin so I follow them.

Finally, are you inspired by an Algerian player?

Not really. Even generally speaking I don’t really take inspiration from a player. After of course Riyad Mahrez for example is a dream.
