Coleraine FC experienced a football fairytale last week on the pitch of Ballymena United in the Northern Ireland League Cup. With a 1-1 after 90 minutes and after extra time, penalties had to decide a ticket for the quarter-finals. And there were no fewer than 44! Coleraine won 17-18. View all penalties below.

Highlights of the match and from 3’30” all penalties

No record

Home team Ballymena had taken a 1-0 lead past Whiteside on the stroke of half-time, Carson equalized on the hour mark.

Then we had to wait until the penalty shootout to see another ball fly into the net. Deane converted the 43rd penalty, Stewart kicked the 44th wide.

That number is not a record. In a professional competition, this is in the name of the Namibian clubs KK Palace and Civics. In 2005, they needed no fewer than 48 penalties to decide their cup match. Palace won 17-16.

But in 2021 there were no fewer than 58 in the Netherlands in a cup match between the U17 of Zutphen and Sparta Enschede. Zutphen won 26-25.
