The World Cup qualifier between Brazil and Argentina has been overshadowed by violence in the stands. Brazilian and Argentinian fans clashed before kick-off. When police intervened, Argentinian hooligans tore off chairs and threw them at officers.

Argentina players who had walked to the stands, including captain Lionel Messi, first tried to calm their supporters. A little later, the world champion decided to retreat to the catacombs of the Maracanã.

Police officers restored order using batons, among other things. At least eight people have been arrested. Photos show nonviolent fans trying to get away and running onto the field or taking shelter under stairs.
