Vetusta rescues a point at the end: chronicle of the blue subsidiary

Oviedo Vetusta got a point yesterday from the Juan Carlos Higuero stadium against Arandina in a match that they could have both won and lost. The Carbayón reserve team hit the crossbar with a ball three minutes into the game that could have changed the fate of the game. After taking the lead, Arandina had a couple of good chances to lead 2-0 and after the tie the Asturians had another great chance in added time. In the end, the Oviedo team scratched out a point at the home of a direct rival, but they have already accumulated six consecutive days without winning.

Jaime Álvarez’s team’s outing onto the field was very good, but it lasted just a few minutes. Very well planted on the grass and exerting very good pressure to steal the ball in the opposite field, after three minutes they had a very clear chance. Diego Menéndez stole a ball and gave it to Omar Falah who stood in front of Jara, but he hit the ball against the crossbar. It could have been 0-1 because the opportunity was very clear. This play made Arandina react, and in what way, because two minutes later a mid-height shot by Frodo was safely blocked by Marco. Shortly after, Otu shot wide. At 10 minutes Raly Cabral, after several breaks, finished when he had already stood in front of Marco, but the ball brushed against the post. And two minutes later Frodo shot the post and the play ended with a handball from the Asturian defense. The corresponding maximum penalty was transformed by Frodo himself.

All this happened in less than a quarter of an hour. A new match began in which Vetusta had to recover the good pressure of the first five minutes if they wanted to balance the match against a very needy opponent. However, in the following minutes they played what Arandina wanted. The local team maintained control of the game with greater possession and playing in the opposite field. In fact, they were ambitious and continued looking for the second goal against a Vetusta that did not react to the goal conceded. The Carbayón reserve team could not have the ball and, therefore, could not generate dangerous plays, a danger that the rival did create because after half an hour Kevin was about to score the second in a cross shot that Marco had to clear with corner kick trouble. In the last five minutes of the first act the Asturian team stretched somewhat, but without causing the local goalkeeper to intervene. The first chance of the second half was for the locals: a shot by Haji from the top of the area that went slightly wide three minutes after the restart. Vetusta was not comfortable on the field, he was late for all the balls and that caused dangerous situations for Arandina, such as a header from Frodo that narrowly missed the goal. Given the ineffectiveness of the team, Jaime Álvarez moved the bench and as soon as he stepped onto the pitch, Xavi Sola had a good chance, but Jara prevented the goal by deflecting the ball with his foot.

Vetusta took advantage of their moment to tie with ten minutes remaining. Xavi Sola received a cross at the far post and crossed the ball to Jara. 1-1. The final minutes were exciting and in added time Vetusta had a clear chance to win. After several rejections and shots, Pesca ended up taking the ball under the goalposts. After suffering in many stages of the match, Vetusta was able to take the victory in the last gasp of the match.

Jaime: “We were able to win the game”

“We didn’t enter the game badly, but Arandina pushed us hard and we were a little stunned with the goal,” explained Jaime Álvarez, Vetusta coach. “The feeling at half-time was good and I really liked the team in the last half hour. In the end, after the tie, we had very clear chances to win the game, the feeling is bittersweet,” he stressed.
