Utilitarian Judo Seminar Offers Benefits for Older Adults at City of Cádiz Sports Complex

He City of Cádiz sports complex It has been the scene of a curious activity dedicated to older people, in which judo has been the main protagonist. This is the seminar/workshop ‘Utilitarian judo adapted to older adults’where attendees and practitioners were able to observe and participate in how, through this study/program, they can improve motor, psychological and social abilities and, therefore, health and quality of life in this population of adults and older people.

This original event, which had the collaboration of the Municipal Sports Institute of Cádiz City Council and the Andalusian Judo Federation and Associated Sports (FANJYDA), is part of the parallel events of the 50th edition of the Raúl Calvo International Judo Memorial Tournament, a competition held last October.

Total, more than 80 elderly people They had the opportunity to attend a theoretical-practical presentation in which a way to improve the development of joint mobility, coordination, balance, the importance of lower body strength and grip strength.

They were shown fall techniques with guidelines and advice to mitigate injuries in cases of accidental falls and how to proceed with them.

Attendees observed and practiced fundamental content of this program, paying attention to the basic components of judo, such as greetings, positions, grips, imbalances, movements and falls.

The studies that have given rise to this program conclude that The application of the ‘Utilitarian Judo adapted to older adults’ program increases the quality of life by positively influencing the fear of falling and the perception of health, based on the improvement of their physical condition and fall control.

The seminar was presented by Carlos Calvoproject director of the Raúl Calvo Judo Club, and directed by Doctor Oscar del Castilloprofessor at the University of Seville (5th DAN of Judo and self-defense), assisted by Luis Toronjoresponsible for the Health and Adapted Judo area of ​​the FANJYDA and 6th DAN of Judo and personal defense.

Present at this event were the councilors of the government team Carlos Lucero, who did so as sports councilor, and Virginia Martín. Both showed their satisfaction with the activity carried out and the good reception of it between participants and attendees, showing their intention to continue it in the future.
