The United States confirmed its status as world champions in women’s softball by beating Puerto Rico 7-0 on Saturday to win the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games.
Allyson Carda allowed just one hit while pitching six shutout innings, in addition to striking out seven.
A solo home run by Amanda Lorenz in the first inning against Puerto Rican starter Aleshia Ocasio led to the American victory in the final played on the Parque Cerrillos diamond.
The Americans increased the lead with a three-run rally in the second inning. A new three-run rally in the sixth ended the game via knockout.
It was the tenth time that the United States won gold in softball at the Pan American Games. Puerto Rico once again fell short of the title, settling for a fourth silver medal in the sport — and the first since Mar del Plata in 1995.
Canada took the bronze medal by beating Mexico 7-0 in the bronze medal match.
