SANTO DOMINGO.-Former Major League Baseball Nelson Cruz thanked the Águilas Cibaeñas for their emotional farewell, indicating that he has experienced a week of many emotions and memories.

Cruz performed the honorary launch with his compatriot, Tony Peña, as the receiver on Friday night at the Cibao Stadium in Santiago de los Caballeros.

Osvaldo Virgil was the first player from Montecristi and the first Dominican in the Major Leagues and like Cruz and Peña, 26 other players from that province followed who have reached the big leagues.

Emotions were part of the moments experienced prior to the match in which the Gigantes del Cibao defeated the Águilas Cibaeñas 10-1.

The Board of Directors of the Águilas Cibaeñas and the fans said goodbye to Nelson Cruz on the second day of the Farewell Tour that began on Thursday in Santo Domingo.

The tough slugger, who stood out in the Major Leagues for 19 seasons, received a T-shirt from the Águilas Cibaeñas, with the players’ signatures stamped on it.

Cruz also received a pad decorated with the symbols of the Eagles and the number 23, which he wore in Lidom with the Gigantes del Cibao, a delivery made by Víctor García Sued, Aguilucho president, Ángel Ovalles, General Manager and Juan Carlos Pérez, captain.

His farewell celebrations are scheduled for a presentation in the five Lidom stadiums, a match against each Lidom team and at the different venues.

The first to celebrate Cruz were the Tigres del Licey along with a minute of silence in memory of Don José (Pepe) Busto, former president of the Club, who died in the early morning.

In the two games he has played in Santo Domingo and Santiago he is 2-for-3, with two RBIs, a walk and one strikeout for a .667 average.

Cruz’s farewell schedule will continue on Sunday afternoon in San Pedro de Macorís and on Tuesday in La Romana and finally on Wednesday, in San Francisco de Macorís, he will make his grand farewell in front of his team’s fans.
