Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand made it through to the women’s doubles quarter-finals at the Syed Modi International 2023 badminton tournament in Lucknow on Thursday.
Commonwealth Games bronze medallists Treesa Jolly-Gayatri Gopichand made the final eight after defeating fellow Indian pair Dhanyaa Nandakumar and Ridhi Kaur Toor 21-9, 21-5 in their second round clash.
Treesa and Gayatri, seeded fourth, will face off against seventh-seeded compatriots Tanisha Crasto and Ashwini Ponnappa, who edged out compatriots Rutaparna and Swetaparna Panda 22-20, 17-21, 21-16 in their second round clash.
Indian badminton players Simran Singhi-Ritika Thaker and Ashwini Bhat K-Shikha Gautam failed to progress beyond the second round of women’s doubles.
Meanwhile, India’s challenge in the women’s singles event concluded on Wednesday with Unnati Hooda, Ashmita Chaliha and Anupama Upadhyaya all faltering in the Round of 16.
Unnati Hooda, world No. 79 in the women’s singles BWF rankings, lost 9-21, 13-21 to Japan’s former world champion Nozomi Okuhara. Unnati Hooda had knocked out compatriot Aakarshi Kashyap in the opening round.
Another Japanese shuttler, the third-seeded Aya Ohori, meanwhile, ousted Ashmita Chaliha, who lost her match 7-21, 13-21. Anupama Upadhyaya bowed out after losing 16-21, 17-21 to Chinese Taipei’s Sung Shuo Yun, who is seeded eighth in the BWF Super 300 event.
India’s Janani Ananthakumar and Ruthvika Shivani Gadde also lost to Malaysia’s Wong Ling Ching and Thailand’s Lalinrat Chaiwan, respectively, in their respective second round clashes.
In men’s singles, Kiran George went down fighting against Chinese Taipei shuttler Chia Hao Lee before finally conceding the match 16-21, 21-18, 20-22 in one hour and 11 minutes.
Priyanshu Rajawat, however, progressed after his opponent Sathish Kumar Karunakaran was forced to retire midway through. Priyanshu was already up by a game at that point.
The mixed doubles and men’s doubles brackets saw the Indian challenge fizzle out as well.
While Ashwini Ponnappa-Rohan Kapoor and B Sumeeth Reddy-N Sikki Reddy failed to win their respective matches in mixed doubles, Chirag Sen and Dhruv Rawat were ousted from the men’s doubles.
Results from the Syed Modi India International will count towards players’ qualifying rankings for the Paris 2024 Olympics.
