Top 14: Pau takes the lead, Montpellier falls again

Pau – Stade Français: 30-6

A week after missing out on its subject in Bayonne (35-16), the Section Paloise recovered well against the Parisian leader. Diligent and skilful, the Béarnais found spaces thanks to their passing game, but it was through strength that they achieved their domination in points. Sacha Zegueur at the conclusion of a maul (4th), then Mickaël Capelli after a handball penalty (31st), gave the Section a comfortable lead at the break (20-6).

Particularly clumsy and impatient, Stade Français failed to force the lock in the second period, facing the serious Pau defense. At the end of the match, captain Luke Whitelock himself went to score the offensive bonus try (76th) to place the Section provisionally at the top of the Top 14.

Montpellier – Oyonnax: 21-26

New staff, same result. Despite the arrival of Bernard Laporte as director of rugby and the appointment of a bloated staff, Montpellier conceded a seventh consecutive defeat which plunged it a little further into crisis.

The MHR was beaten at the GGL Stadium by the promoted Oyonnax. Despite a good start to the match, materialized by tries from Simmonds (7-0, 5th) and Chalureau (14-7, 25th), Montpellier sank little by little, unable at first to score at 15 against 13 after the cards. yellows conceded by Farrell (37th) and Raynaud (40th+4), then clearly dominated in the second period by Oyomen, masters of foot occupation.

After hanging on in the first period thanks to tries from Ikpefan (7-7, 17th) and Bouraux (14-14, 36th), the visitors made the difference thanks to Farrell (14-21, 59th) and Salles (14-26, 74th). Willemse’s try (21-26, 78th) changed nothing, except for a meager offensive bonus. Montpellier is indeed last…

Bordeaux-Bègles – Perpignan: 46-22

Union Bordeaux-Bègles easily won against Perpignan (46-22). An enhanced success harvested largely thanks to its flagship recruit: Damian Penaud. Already author of his first try under his new colors last week in La Rochelle (25-21 defeat), the French international blazed for his first at Chaban Delmas. Penaud scored a quadruple! He opened the scoring on the first action after less than two minutes of play. He did it again in the 17th, 33rd and 40th. At halftime, the score was folded (34-5).

The second period was unfortunately not of the same ilk. The UBB, which preserved its executives by quickly removing Lucu (52nd), Jalibert (54th) and Penaud (58th), saw Perpignan wake up. The Catalans scored two tries in quick succession (Roelofse, 57th and Acebes, 61st).

The Bordelais finally gave a little boost through their forwards with two tries signed Lamothe (69th) and Poirot (76th) to ensure the victory and the offensive bonus. Thanks to this five-point success, UBB moves back into the middle of the table.

Lyon – Bayonne: 42-29

After three defeats in a row, the Lyonnais wanted to “pay themselves” against Bayonne. They did so but without tipping and without completely reassuring themselves. Bayonne, diligent in defense and playful, started well by keeping the Lyonnais in their camp during the first quarter of an hour.

But a Spring kick blocked by Couilloud allowed the LOU captain to score a try against the run of play. This woke up the pragmatic Lyonnais who doubled the lead through Romain Taofifenua. The Basques, for their part, increased their blunders and gave LOU a comfortable lead at the break (17-3).

Despite a third try from Jackson from the restart, Lyon’s lack of confidence returned at a gallop. In a completely disorganized defense, the Bayonnais scored three tries in six minutes! But the Lyonnais, on a tightrope, closed ranks and reacted with strength and courage by finally letting go in the last ten minutes with a double from Regard.
