The Towers’ Winning Streak Comes to an End in Arch-Rival Matchup

The Towers’ soaring is over. After four wins in a row in the easyCredit BBL, Hamburg’s basketball players conceded 87:96 (40:45) at arch-rival Chemnitz.

The Niners, on the other hand, expanded their super series to 15 games across all competitions. And take the lead in the table for at least one evening!

“It was the expected physical game, incredibly difficult,” said Towers coach Benka Barloschky. “We didn’t put up a good fight at the beginning, but then we found a way to get into the game. Whenever we had the momentum, Chemnitz had an answer. But I’m still happy with the performance.”

Since the Towers snatched promotion to the first league from the Niners in their hall in 2019, they have not suffered well there. At the last meeting in May (80:87), Lukas Meisner was so insulted and insulted after the game in the exhibition hall that he broke off the live TV interview. And this time too, Meisner received nasty whistles every time he touched the ball.

That didn’t fail to have an effect. Meisner was completely out of character in the heated atmosphere – only played 6:08 minutes and remained without a point. And our colleagues once again made a false start: no defense, ten ball losses in the first quarter alone! The Niners were quickly ahead by 15 points (21:6/8).

The usually quiet Towers coach Barloschky became loud during his first timeout, shouting “Fuck!”. Defensive back Nico Brauner at halftime: “We definitely needed that. Not only that, but more.”

In fact, the Hamburg team caught themselves, defended better and, above all, came back close by safely converting free throws. Third division professional Camron Reece from Rist Wedel made a solid BBL debut as a replacement for the ill center Aleksander Dziewa. The outstanding VJ King had his best game so far for the Towers with 30 points. Aljami Durham (23 points) also set a personal record.

Nevertheless, it wasn’t enough to turn the game around and keep their own series alive. Because the people of Chemnitz always had an answer.

King: “That’s been our theme all season. We come out slowly and often dig ourselves a hole…”

The Towers continue on Tuesday in the EuroCup in Venice (8 p.m., Magenta Sport).
