The Tactical Evolution of Latina: A Collaborator’s Insight

Since 1992 he has been a collaborator of “Il Messaggero”, since 2009 he has collaborated with the “Gazzetta dello Sport”. He starts out writing about baseball, then gives in to the tentacles of football.

Latina is always generous in offering ideas for a tactical reading of their matches. A sign of the flexibility guaranteed by a good part of the Nerazzurri players and of the “vision” of an inspired Di Donato.

Talking about Latina is talking about something in continuous change and transformation, today’s comments, in terms of tactics, will probably be waste paper tomorrow. Latina has accustomed us to this: it can be the protagonist of excellent performances, as was the victory in Foggia (1-2), as well as unexpected defeats, and the reference is to the home defeat against Picerno (0-3 ). It’s not a question of continuity.

Constantly changing one’s tactical guise ends up confusing even the critics who, by profession, should be accustomed to unraveling the structure of a comparison. And so, to remain tested in the land of Puglia, in translating Latina’s presence on the pitch into a module, there are those who saw a 3-5-2 with Del Sole fifth and Riccardi inside, those who saw the 3-4-2- 1 with Del Sole and Riccardi supporting Mastroianni, who directly the 3-4-3.

As for me, I appreciated a constantly evolving formation, with Riccardi and Del Sole flattened in the midfield when there was a need to put the Satanels’ midfield patched up by injuries in difficulty, only to then move up with the same Riccardi and Del Sole when there was a need to attack spaces and opponent. A demonstration of this is the action that led to the goal of the Nerazzurri’s lead, born from a driving initiative through the central streets by Riccardi who starts well before the midfield line, while Mastroianni as usual is climbing towards the midfield and Del Sole immediately launches himself in the space left free on the right.

A similar arrangement allowed Latina, as they had already done for much of the first half against Picerno, to easily conquer the opponent’s area and to position themselves confidently beyond the midfield. An ability which, however, is still struggling to find (and here Di Donato will have to work) the measure of the cross, the support, the finishing.

Lastly, it is worth highlighting Riccardi’s superb performance, by far the best overall of the evening in Foggia. His performance marked a point of discontinuity compared to the test against Picerno together with the use of Cittadino, called by Di Donato to reinterpret the central role within a tactical project that is difficult to classify as the classic 3-5- 2. In Foggia, when the midfield was set up at two, Cittadino and Di Livio guaranteed a robust interdiction effort, allowing Riccardi to enjoy that freedom of position and inventiveness which was the basis of the ex-Roman player’s majestic performance and success Nerazzurri.

A further tactical variant available to Di Donato.
