The Rise of the Tischler Twins: From Bundesliga Sensations to NBA Dreams

They are the first twins in the Easycredit Basketball Bundesliga. Their potential impressed world champion Dennis Schröder so much that he brought the two of them to his club, the Basketball Lions Braunschweig: Brandon and Nico Tischler.

Both are (of course) 23 years old, 2.01 meters tall, play the same position (small forward) and, apart from the haircut, look absolutely similar because they are identical twins.

The Tischler twins have been playing for Braunschweig in the Bundesliga since 2021. This season they are given more responsibility and playing time (Nico 24 minutes on average per game, Brandon 18) than ever before and are using it very successfully. Like the last time in the sensational home win against Bayern (83:81)!

With Dyn presenter Paul Gudde, Brandon and Nico are now unpacking, reporting in the “Dyn 360” format about their connection to NBA shooting star Victor Wembanyama (19), why Braunschweig partner Dennis Schröder treated them like a “brother” and how Nowitzki- Mentor Holger Geschwindner helped her career jumpstart.

Review: At the age of 5, the twins started playing for Brose Baskets in their hometown of Bamberg. When they were both 11, “Holger Geschwindner came into our lives as an individual trainer.” At first there were around 30 children there, the aim was to have fun and try out different moves.

Brandon: “The sessions with Holger were on weekends, Saturdays, at 10 a.m. As you get older, like 15 or so, your interests change. Then fewer and fewer boys came to training. But our focus was still on basketball, we pushed each other. At some point there were only four of us at Holger’s. That’s when he realized we were serious.”

During the Corona lockdown, the two initially trained individually, at home, outside on the outdoor area in ice and snow and even in the dark and then also in Braunschweig. Partner Dennis Schröder was convinced by their talent and willpower and signed the twins.

Nico: “We met with Dennis in the arena, watched the training from a distance and he said, hey, everything was easy. I know under what conditions you train, don’t stress yourself out. He took some of the pressure off of us.”

Brandon: “You had a picture in front of Dennis. That was 3 years ago and he wasn’t yet a world champion. The image of him was a bit negative. Then we met him and it was very cool. It was like he was our third brother.”

Nico: “He welcomed us with open arms and showed us around Braunschweig. He told us: ‘If you have the same work ethic that you have had so far, then I won’t worry.’ He made us feel good.”

Suddenly NBA shooting star Victor Wembanyama showed up at the Tischler twins in Braunschweig

Nico: “Holger Geschwindner said that a Frenchman like that is coming to training next week. Pick him up at the train station. But then Holger picked him up first and said, just come into the hall.”

Brandon: “I walk in the door and there’s someone making free throws and it looked like his head was at ring level. Oh, I thought, it’s that Wembanyama. We had already seen it on social media. It was a cool time. We trained for a week or two, got along well off the field and went out to eat together. We have a good connection.”

Nico: “We started playing one-on-one. Suddenly Wemby started playing through his legs and behind his back, doing spin moves. I just thought it was moving way too fast for its size. What is he doing there? Suddenly he does a stepback threesome. I thought, I can’t defend that, he can’t do that. Then he hit the first two or three. Then I thought, oh, maybe he can do it after all. He was very self-confident, but had a picture-perfect appearance in public. He already knew back then that he would be drafted number one in the NBA. We wrote to each other before the draft and also before his first game. We’re not best friends now, but we definitely have a connection.”

There is one more thing that unites the carpenter twins and Victor Wembanyama. The NBA is also the absolute dream destination for Brandon and Nico. But the twins don’t give in to dreams and want to continue to prove in Braunschweig that they deserve their playing time.
