The Passion and Loyalty of Local Coaches in Malaysia: Why They Choose to Stay

PETALING JAYA: Women’s singles coach K. Yogendran (pic) believes that the passion for the sport is the main motivation for local coaches, who choose to ply their trade in the country rather than seek better fortunes abroad.

“I have coached overseas before but I believe Malaysia is still the best,” said Yogendran.

Yogendran was responding to the exodus of local coaches from badminton, gymnastics, squash and cycling to mention a few, to different countries for better perks and coaching future.

“I was the chief coach of Mauritius for six years before I quit after the Tokyo Olympics in 2021.

“In sports, it’s not just about the money but also the passion. Sometimes, however, much of money is also never enough.

“I’m from Malaysia and as a coach, I want to do the best for my country.

“If my country don’t want me and I get another offer, it’s different.

“If you have a chance, surely you will want to work in Malaysia. Only if you don’t get the opportunity, then you need to look elsewhere.”

Yogendran had joined the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) as men’s singles coach in 2021.The 41-year-old was then switched to the women’s singles department in May this year.

Yogendran is content with his position and believes that BAM will reward coaches well when they produce good results.

“The coaches need to prove their capability by producing good results,” said Yogendran.

“I think so far, everything is good in BAM. Of course we want more but we need to produce the results.

“We need to work hard and we will be rewarded,” added Yogendran.
