Czech ice hockey mourns the loss of goalkeeper Roman Cechmanek. The long-time team player and goalie in the National Hockey League (NHL) died unexpectedly on Sunday at the age of 52.

Cechmanek represented the Czech Republic at seven world championships, winning two gold and two bronze medals. In 1998 he became Olympic champion with the Czechs as a substitute behind Dominik Hasek. The goaltender played 212 games in the NHL, most of them for the Philadelphia Flyers.
According to the website of the international association IIHF, the cause of his sudden death has not yet been clarified. Cechmanek’s son is said to have found his father dead in his house on Sunday. According to the IIHF, Cechmanek had previously canceled an ice hockey game among friends due to feeling unwell.
