Andrey Rublev is considered an extremely nice guy off the pitch – but things are often different on the court

It wasn’t the first time that Andrey Rublev took out his frustration on himself in the semifinals of the ATP World Tour 500 tournament in Vienna and came away with a serious scratch on his knee. The trigger was Jannik Sinner’s incredible comeback, who was able to turn a 2:5 deficit into a 7:5 set win. Of course, the nerves of the fifth-placed player in the world rankings were getting the best of him, but self-harm should never occur, no matter how big the trouble may be.

Fans and experts alike have long been amazed at the auto-aggressive antics of the 26-year-old Muscovite, whom practically all fellow players consider to be one of the nicest people on the ATP tour – off the court, mind you. For example, Daria Kasatkina (“He would never allow you to pay the bill in a restaurant”), Caper Ruud (“He is a very nice, attentive and calm person”) and Dominic Thiem (“He just has a very, very good heart”) their unlimited benevolence.

Is there anything else going on in the area of mental training?

Although strong polarizations in human mental life are by no means uncommon, Rublev’s behavior on the pitch, which is diametrically opposed to this, does not fit in at all. The calls for a sensible mental trainer are becoming louder and louder on social networks, because it is neither pleasant for the audience to attend such interludes, nor can such actions serve as a good role model for the next generation of tennis.

Be that as it may, the current fifth in the world rankings already has qualification for the ATP Finals in Turin in his pocket. We can only hope that any moments of frustration among the East Slavs do not arise at all or that they end with a milder expression of displeasure. Rublev’s knees and the audience are to be wished.
