The athletes who call to vote for Sergio Massa | The joint statement one week before the runoff

A little more than a hundred Argentine athletes, among whom are world soccer champions such as Ubaldo Fillol, Héctor Enrique, Jorge Olguín and José Luis Lanao (youth); boxers like Jorge “Locomotora” Castro, María Elena “Tily” Maderna and Pablo Chacón; skate career as Maria Eva Richardson; taekwondo like Denis Turnes; the soccer players Macarena Sánchez and Mónica Santino; Olympic volleyball medalists Jon Emili Uriarte and Waldo Kantor; the Olympic gymnast and actress Gabriela Parigi; the multi-Pan American Paralympic swimmer Ariel Quassi; and the Chess Grandmasters Claudia Amura and Florencia Fernández, joined together to call to vote for the candidate for president of Unión por la Patria.

They organized themselves for the first time as a political subject, and they ask for more and better public policies from the State.

The statement is the following:

Committed Argentine athletes at the crucial moment our country is going through, we call to vote for Sergio Massa.

In an unprecedented political event, for the first time since the return to democracy, during the electoral campaign, a presidential candidate presented his sports policy platform, with a great proposal that contemplates the development and strengthening of the National Sports System, in each of its stages.

In contrast, we observe with concern the progress of the candidates of the neoliberal, misogynistic and exclusive far-right coalition, headed by the Milei-Villarruel formula, which in the run-up to the runoff added the support of former president Mauricio Macri, with the sole idea of eliminating the Ministry of Tourism and Sports.

Those of us who recognize sport as a right (UNESCO, 1975), the growth in social organizations, its power as a tool of transformation, the effort of the struggle of women, of sexual diversities, of sport for people with disabilities as groups with greater obvious vulnerability, and a social debt still to be paid, we understand the inalienable role of the State as a guarantor, responsible for promoting equal opportunities, so that the Argentine people, without distinction of gender or economic condition, can access, train and enjoy the sport, managing to deploy their potential and capacity; and those who have the vocation and conditions can enter high performance and aspire to represent the country.

Sergio Massa has already announced the reestablishment of the economic autarky of the National High Performance Sports Entity (ENARD), scholarships for high-performance athletes, the sanction of the Double Career law, incorporating athletes and coaches into the work and retirement regime, which 100% of the clubs have access to social rates for services, benefits for children and retirees to enter sports, the regulation of the club law and the deepening of the Clubs in Work Program.

It is worth remembering that, without any reason in favor of sport, in 2017 Macri scrapped the economic autonomy of ENARD, which represented the most important advance in decades in the ability to financially support medium and long-term planning, which the indiscriminate increase in rates of services put hundreds of neighborhood clubs at risk of disappearance, and attempted the privatization and sale of the National High Performance Center (CENARD).

With Macri, the sport has already experienced what chainsaw politics means.

On that occasion, athletes and coaches did not react to prevent such a mistake.

As if that were not enough, privatizing neoliberalism comes from the history of our clubs. The entities belong to their partners. We refuse to be transformed into sports corporations and reduced to mere business instruments for a few.

It is time to give our testimony, after having gone through these experiences. These are times of commitment and action.

The people, the clubs, the federations, their leaders, the athletes, coaches, sports workers, the boys and girls, the older adults, are the protagonists of the National Sports System and, When we see our best athletes transformed into great ambassadors of the Nation, we confirm that the State must guarantee universal access for all.

For all the above, with our experience and the desire for a better present and future for our people, from the sports community we dare to ask your vote for Sergio Massa as President.
