As England coach, Venables faced Colombia in 1995, in a memorable friendly match played at the legendary Wembley stadium in London. On September 6, 1995, England and Colombia tied 0-0, but it will be remembered for the play of ‘the scorpion’, which immortalized René Higuita.

The maneuver that René Higuita executed is called ‘The Scorpion’ because of its particular shape. It was a movement that the archer trained frequently.

Successful career for Venables

Venables died on Saturday after a long illness, his family said in a statement released by the British media.

As a coach, Venables led the English team to the semi-finals of the Euro Cup in 1996 and Barça to the final of the European Cup in 1986, in addition to winning the League in 1985.

“We are totally devastated by the loss of a wonderful husband and father, who died peacefully yesterday after a long illness,” the family said, asking for respect for their privacy at this time.

Tributes and tributes began to arrive immediately after news of the death spread. One of the players coached by Venables was Gary Lineker, now a British television star, who declared himself “devastated” by the news and considered the deceased “the best and most innovative” coach he worked with.

One of the teams most marked by Venables’ footprint was the Tottenham Hotspurs – the team in which he played from 1966 to 1969 and for which he coached from 1987 to 1991 – who sent their condolences through a message on their social networks and announced that They will observe a minute of silence for him today against Aston Villa.

As a player, he was a midfielder without much brilliance, but with a long career of more than 500 games for Chelsea, Tottenham, Queens Park Rangers and Crystal Palace, all London clubs, which earned him two appearances with the national team.

It was as a coach when Venables’ figure acquired a greater dimension. He debuted in a classic ‘elevator team’, Crystal Palace, whom he left in the first division, and then took charge of another modest team, QPR, which he led to the Cup final in 1982.

His great opportunity came from his supporter Bryan Robson, who recommended him for the FC Barcelona bench in 1984. In one year he led the Catalans to their first League title since 1974, in a team in which Bernd Schuster stood out in the midfield.

In 1986, he managed to qualify Barça for the European Cup final in Seville against Steaua Bucharest, an unfortunate memory for the Spanish club when they lost on penalties after the match ended 0-0.

Dismissed in September 1987, just two months later he was called up by Tottenham, to whom he won the FA Cup in 1991.

But if Venables is remembered for something in his country, it is for his period at the helm of the English team, with which he was on the verge of reaching the final of the European Championship of which they were hosts in 1996.

After having eliminated Spain on penalties in the quarterfinals, England lost in the same way against Germany in the semifinals.

One of the stars of that team, striker Alan Shearer, said goodbye to Venables today with a message in which he acknowledged “owing him a lot” and in which he described him as “amazing.”

After passing through the English team, Venables returned to manage Crystal Palace, as well as Middlesbrough and Leeds, although his career never returned to the previous level.
