Tebas resigns as president of LaLiga to call elections

The president of LaLiga, Javier Tebashas submitted his resignation to advance the electoral process scheduled for the year 2024. Tebas will present itself to opt for a fourth consecutive term at the head of the clubs’ employers’ association, in elections in which it is not expected that there will be opposition for the Huesca leader to be re-elected.

The resignation of Tebas, advanced by Relevo, responds to a strategic decision by the president, which considers it more appropriate to hold elections before the end of this year. Thus, among other things, it prevents the process from overlapping with the election of a new president of the RFEF. His term expired within a month, on December 23.

The massive support it has from the presidents of the 42 professional First and Second Division clubs (almost all votes obtain a majority close to 40 votes) makes it practically impossible to have competition in the elections. Actually, the only club directly facing Tebas at present is Real Madrid, given that FC Barcelona and Athletic have softened their relations with LaLiga in recent months.

The last elections in LaLiga

In the last elections, those of December 2019, he did not have any opposition and in the previous ones, those of 2016, the former president of Eibar Alex Aranzabal He was unable to find the 11 endorsements necessary to formally launch his candidacy. Tebas has been president of LaLiga since 2013, when he succeeded José Luis Astiazaranformer president of the Royal Society.

The forecast of Tebas and his team is that he will be re-elected as president in a period that can range between two weeks and one month, depending on possible allegations that there may be to the electoral call and whether a candidate may present himself, something unlikely. In 2019, 21 days passed from the time he resigned until he was again proclaimed president for the current four-year term.

With these times, Tebas would once again be president-elect for four years on December 21, when it will be announced the decision of the Court of Justice of the European Union about whether or not there is an illegal UEFA monopoly on European football, within the case Super League. A transcendental decision regarding the possible future viability of the competition promoted by Florentino Pérez.

What the LaLiga statutes say

As stated in the LaLiga statutes, after Tebas’ resignation, the an electoral commission made up of representatives of five clubs, chosen by draw, three from First and two from Second. It will be this body that will formally call the elections in the three days following their constitution, which should take place this Wednesday.

During the electoral process, the two vice presidents of LaLiga, Miguel Ángel Gil Marín (Atletico Madrid) and Quico Catalan (Levante), assume, together with the legal director of the organization, María José López Lorenzowill assume the powers that statutorily correspond to the person who exercises the presidency.

Thebes must collect the endorsement of 11 clubs to formalize your candidacy, something that will not pose any problem. In the unlikely event that another candidate came to the fore, the same club would not be able to endorse both candidates, having to decide on one of them.
