Tamara Korpatsch’s Resurgence in Tennis and Ongoing Issues with DTB

Tamara Korpatsch is probably playing the best tennis of her professional career – with the tournament victory in Cluj-Napoca, Romania being the highlight. But as they soar, old wounds in dealing with the DTB also resurface.

It’s been a good two weeks since Tamara Korpatsch celebrated her first WTA title in Cluj-Lapoca, Romania, with a 6:4, 6:4 final against local hero Elena-Gabriela Ruse. Nevertheless, team captain Rainer Schüttler did not nominate her for the finals of the Billie Jean King Cup in Seville in mid-November, which is a disappointment for Tamara Korpatsch, as she revealed on “NDR Sportclub”: “Unfortunately, I have never been nominated – and when I was asked if I could fill in for the injured Tatjana Maria in Croatia, I couldn’t do it,” she says.

Were other players given preference?

The DTB was surprised at her rejection for Croatia, but Korpatsch justified himself on NDR: “I explained why I needed a break for health reasons.” Poor lung values are the reason for her cancellation, a problem that has plagued her again and again since she had a flu or an undetected corona infection in 2019. “That was understood back then,” said Korpatsch, “I don’t know why people are looking for that as an excuse now. You can’t play tennis with less than 80 percent lung function.”

But she still has a problem with the bandage. She thinks that other players were given more support than she was over the years: “It hurt me a lot that others were always preferred who weren’t any better than me,” she said.

It seems as if there is still a lot of need for clarification.
