In order to preserve the memory of its former editor-in-chief Sven Simon, WELT AM SONNTAG founded the Sven Simon Prize, which has long since become a great tradition. This year, Germany’s most valuable sports photography award is celebrating its 25th anniversary.

The son of the publisher Axel Springer, who died at the age of 38, was a passionate photographer and had achieved worldwide recognition under the pseudonym Sven Simon. His picture from the 1966 World Cup, which shows Uwe Seeler leaving the pitch at Wembley Stadium in London in the final against England, was named “Sports Photo of the Century”.

In 2023, a top-class jury chaired by Axel Sven Springer, Sven Simon’s son, will again select the most beautiful images. Sports idols such as Felix Neureuther, Malaika Mihambo, Manuel Neuer, Katarina Witt, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Heiner Brand and Franz Beckenbauer Brand decide on the winner with their vote.
