Surviving Domestic Abuse: A Story of Escape and Rescue

To escape the violence and save her child she had fled all the way to Spain. But the man, who had been abusing her for three years, had managed to find her and, by threatening to kill her family, had convinced her to return to Italy, to Rome. Once she returned home, the nightmare began again and the abuse became increasingly violent. Until the afternoon of November 20th when the victim, a 28-year-old foreigner of Ukrainian origin, called for help for the first time. But out of fear of being attacked once again by her violent partner, after a few seconds she hung up. The attempted call from the police switchboard was unsuccessful so, as there was no response, the rescue chain was activated. The officers went back to the address from which the first phone call had originated, and the visibly upset young girl opened the door. Yet she tried to push the police away: “It wasn’t me who called, nothing happened in the house, everything is fine” she said several times. Only after several minutes did the police manage to enter Settebagni’s apartment where the abuse had taken place for years.

THE COMPLAINT

The officers then proceeded with an inspection inside the house up to the bedroom where they found, in the dark and with a one year old child in his arms, a man who, upon seeing the uniforms, immediately threatened the young woman: «Don’t speak or I’ll kill you.”

At that point, the officers raised the alarm. In the meantime, they removed the girl who, once safe, began to tell the story of the nightmare she had experienced for three years. From the beginning of their relationship, the man abused her. Kicks, punches, insults. The victim never found the courage to report but over the last year she took photos, as evidence of the abuse, which she handed over to investigators who were thus able to reconstruct the series of attacks which became even more violent after the birth of the child.

THE ARREST

The support network for women victims of violence was activated for the girl and the child. The man, a 42-year-old Georgian, was handcuffed on charges of domestic abuse. During the investigations it also emerged that since 2021 he had been expelled from Italy with a ban on returning to Italy for 10 years. Therefore, the result being irregular, the agents started the repatriation procedure.
