With one silver and two bronzes, the Spanish judokas have made a strong start to the European Championships being held this weekend in Montpellier (France), which will be a general rehearsal for the Paris Games.
This Friday, David García Torné has been proclaimed runner-up in the -66kg category, while Fran Garrigós (-60kg), current world champion, and Laura Martinez (-48kg) have had to settle for bronze.

Torné, after a good championship in which he defeated the Englishman Charlie Young, the Italian Fabio Basile, the Ukrainian Bogdan Iadov and the Russian Murad, tasted the gold in a fight of more than five minutes that was finally won by Waza-ari the Moldovan Denis Vieru in the gold technique. However, this second European place is the main international achievement for the Spaniard.
The path to gold for Garrigós, current world champion, was twisted in the quarterfinals after lose to Frenchman Romain Valadier in a fight decided by shidos (warnings). Tied at two, the third shido nine minutes into the golden technique gave the local judoka the victory. The man from Madrid recovered in the repechage, which defeated the Azerbaijani Turan Bayramov and gave him the opportunity to fight for third place, which he won through Waza-ari against the Russian Ramazan Abdulaev.
The same result was obtained Laura Martinez, who after losing in the quarterfinals against the Portuguese Catarina Costa, took the bronze in a duel with the also Spanish Mireia Lapuerta, defeated in the semifinals. The Malaga native managed to keep the score ahead from the start of the fight after scoring a Waza-ari that finally earned her European bronze, her best international result.

There were no medals in the -52kg and -57kg categories. Ariane Toro and Estrella López lost in their first fights, as well as Adriana Rodríguez and Jaione Equisoain.
