103 seconds have been played, then Draymond Green applies a violent stranglehold. Now the Golden State Warriors’ star player has to miss a few games. The attack wasn’t Green’s first; his own coach was gradually fed up with the NBA bully’s misfires.

His coach Steve Kerr has clearly reprimanded professional basketball player Draymond Green for his bad stranglehold. “He has to find a way not to cross the line. I’m not talking about technical fouls or an ejection. I’m talking about acts of physical violence. That’s inexcusable,” said the Golden State Warriors coach on Thursday evening (local time). The Warriors lost their game 109:128 against the Oklahoma City Thunder.

The 33-year-old Green put Rudy Gobert of the Minnesota Timberwolves in a high-intensity stranglehold on Tuesday and was sent off for it. The North American professional league NBA suspended him for five games. It is the longest suspension for an in-game altercation for an NBA professional in more than a decade. As a result, Green loses a salary worth $769,704 (around €711,000).

“A terrible picture for the league”

“He went too far. That was wrong, he knows it. The five-game suspension is deserved,” said Kerr. “I have no problem with that [Green] tries to get Rudy away from Klay, but he has to let go,” Kerr said. “He held on for six, seven seconds. It was a terrible picture for the league, for Draymond and for everyone.” Shortly after the game with Green’s chokehold, Kerr defended the attack and drew criticism from some NBA commentators and experts for it. Even for previous actions and suspensions As a bully professional, the trainer had always held back – at least publicly – from using words of reprimand.

The NBA announced Green’s suspension Wednesday night, and in a statement, NBA vice president Joe Dumars said Green escalated an on-court altercation “in an unsportsmanlike and dangerous manner.” Dumars also said Green’s previous offenses played a role in the length of the suspension. Most recently, the Warriors star intentionally stepped on the chest of the Sacramento Kings center who was lying on the ground; he had previously kicked LeBron James in the soft tissues.

In the Warriors’ 101-104 loss on Tuesday night, Green, Klay Thompson and Jaden McDaniels were thrown off the court before the first basket. McDaniel’s and Thompson’s tugging on their counterpart’s jersey started the scuffle between the two teams after just 103 seconds and with the score at 0-0. Green has been sent off for the 19th time in his career – more than twice as often as any other active NBA professional. “He must not cross this line,” repeated coach Kerr, who promised further support from the club for the hothead.
