Sebastian Kneißl supports VAR at HSV against Braunschweig

As of: November 24, 2023 4:28 p.m

The DFB will start a test on Friday to possibly improve the video evidence. Ex-professional Sebastian Kneißl will support in the Cologne basement.

The 40-year-old, who played for Fortuna Düsseldorf and Chelsea FC during his active career, is supposed to help video referee Daniel Siebert in the game between Hamburger SV and Eintracht Braunschweig (6:30 p.m.) with his decisions from the perspective of a former footballer. However, the decision-making power should still lie with the referees if Kneißl’s assessments differ from Sieberts or, above all, those of Max Burda, who will referee the game.

Feuerherdt: “The idea is obvious”

Alexander Feuerherdt, head of communications and media relations at DFB Schiri GmbH, emphasized in the Sportschau conversation that this was a first attempt that would then be analyzed extensively together with Kneißl (currently a TV expert at “DAZN”). It remains to be seen whether former professionals will permanently support the decision-making process in the “Kölner Keller” in the future.

“We don’t want to close ourselves off to any idea and the idea that a former professional footballer could perhaps contribute something positive with his view of football is obvious. It’s about an advisory role that we would like to try out,” said Feuerherdt. “Sebastian Kneißl has been there before and knows the processes. If a situation arises in which he has a different opinion than the video assistant, that’s the way it is, but Daniel Siebert is not bound to it. We’re excited to see how which will be internal.”
