SC Freiburg Coach Christian Streich Looking to Collect Points Before Christmas

SC Freiburg is still in the top half of the table, but the gap to the now unfamiliar bottom of the table is shrinking. Christian Streich’s senses are sharpened as always. The coach says his Christmas wish and looks to Piraeus.

Since the fight to stay in the league in the 2018/19 season, which was successfully won with just 36 points, the sports club has had almost nothing to do with the bottom of the table. “The last three or four years were unbelievable, now we are in reality and we are also unlucky with injuries. But that’s no problem, the boys do everything, then everything is okay,” said Streich after the disappointing 1-1 draw against Newcomer Darmstadt.

It’s not just the commitment of the Freiburg professionals that is right despite all the offensive problems. Everything in the table is still okay, at least at first glance. The SC is still in the top half in ninth place, but is only seven points ahead of 16th place. “The table is deceptive, we have twelve games and 15 points. You have to make sure that they don’t get any closer,” explains Streich .

Prank: “I know which way I’m looking”

The 58-year-old is referring to the teams from the extended relegation zone. The people of Breisgau used to live there for many years. A very strenuous and nerve-wracking time that has left its mark on Streich to this day. Even in the last two exceptional seasons in the top 6, he never completely lost sight of the lower area. “I know which direction I’m looking in and what’s at stake for us,” emphasizes the SC coach.

“The games aren’t getting any easier,” says Streich, referring to the four league opponents Mainz, Wolfsburg, Cologne and Heidenheim, with whom Freiburg still has to compete until the end of the year and three of whom are waiting away – the Breisgauer team only play against Effzeh at home. “I would like two or three points more, then we would be in a calmer area. It looks okay, but it’s so-so,” says Streich and formulates his Christmas wish: “We have to make sure that we get two more before the winter break Get victories and everything would be okay.”

Who could return against Piraeus?

First of all, on Thursday (6.45 p.m., LIVE! on kicker) against Olympiakos Piraeus it’s about overwintering in the Europa League. Even a draw would be enough to guarantee second place. “It will be a very difficult, extremely intense game. Olympiakos is nothing like last year,” says Streich, whose team won 3-0 in Greece last season, secured group victory with a 1-1 draw at home in the second leg and this one too With a bit of luck, we managed to win 3-2 in Piraeus this season. “They have a really good team, we are happy and going into the home game with full force,” said Streich.

As is well known, the SC coach hasn’t had a full selection of personnel for a long time. Of the eight injured, Streich is most likely to expect Roland Sallai to return on time after his torn muscle fiber in his thigh. With Merlin Röhl (torn wound), the risk for Thursday’s game will still be too great.
