Resilient Hamburg Basketball Team Secures Victory Against Bamberg Baskets

The fans in Inselpark stood and clapped. The Towers took the victory lap. What a fight! What a nerve shocker!

Hamburg’s basketball players won their fourth game in a row in the easyCredit BBL. And they took revenge with 94:88 (43:42) against Bamberg Baskets for the bitter 64:80 in the cup round of 16.

“Joy, relief, pride – there are a lot of feelings that go together,” said coach Benka Barloschky. “This team is resilient and manages to find that extra spark within themselves.”

The first quarter went to Hamburg with good team basketball. But the offensively strong Bambergers could not be shaken off and took the second. Even after the break, the guests had an answer to every run. And fought for a lead with an 18:3 run (75:66/34th). Craziness!

But the Towers still had strength for one last answer. Led by Jonas Wohlfarth-Bottermann, they made the hall explode with a final show of strength. “Jonas played an outstanding game defensively,” praised Barloschky. “Especially in the second half. That was the basis for us stopping them.”

WoBo gets contact lenses from the parking lot!

What hardly anyone noticed: WoBo lost a contact lens in the second quarter and had to go down (13th) because he couldn’t play with one eye. “Unfortunately it was gone,” says the EM hero. And has to laugh: “Then the replacement lens was somehow missing in the suitcase. But luckily I had a spare lens in the car.”

WoBo put on a jacket, changed his shoes and ran into the parking lot through the rain. “I said, I have to go myself, no one else will find it in my car.” He came back with fresh perspective – and helped turn the game around.

Lukas Meisner finally put the lid on things with a crazy three-pointer 16 seconds before the end. Finally? No! Because two controversial offensive foul whistles against the Towers almost ruined everything…

Towers boss Marvin Willoughby rushed to the referees after the final siren. And had to be reassured by his professionals.

The best Hamburg thrower was VJ King with 16 points. “An important victory. We relied on our defense, our physicality and believed in ourselves. A great one. Victory.”

The Towers continue on Tuesday in the EuroCup against Vilnius/Lithuania (7 p.m., Magenta Sport).
