Cristian Javier prepares for his return to the big tent

Astros starter Cristian Javier, who was ruled out at Nationals Park on April 21 due to neck discomfort, will make a minor league rehab start this weekend.

Javier, 27, had a bullpen session Wednesday and was on pace to come off the disabled list this weekend against the Mariners, but the Astros decided the right-hander will need at least one minor league rehab outing.

“We felt the best thing for him was to pitch some innings in the minor leagues,” said Astros manager Joe Espada.

In four starts for Houston this season, Javier is 2-0 with a 1.54 ERA and 11 strikeouts. He has walked 11 while limiting opposing hitters to a .183 average.
