Regensburg to Host U18 and U12 European Baseball Championships in 2024

It doesn’t always have to be football or ice hockey: this summer the next major event is taking place in Regensburg’s baseball stadium, the Armin Wolf Arena: The European Baseball and Softball Association WBSC Europe has awarded the U18 European Baseball Championships 2024 to Regensburg. The U12 European Championships will also take place in Germany.

Regensburg will experience another major baseball event next year. From July 8th to 14th, 2024, the European Junior Baseball Championship will be held at the Guggenberg Legionnaires’ facility. The last time a U18 European Baseball Championship took place in Germany was in Bonn in 2009. Including host Germany, a total of twelve nations are taking part in the tournament. Spain is the defending champion. The German U18 took fifth place at the last event in 2022.

Experience for players and fans

“A major event of this quality is good for baseball Germany. For us as Guggenberger Legionnaires, the U18 European Championship is also very important because the development and support of young players is particularly important to us,” says Armin Zimmermann, CEO of the Guggenberger Legionnaires Regensburg. “The state performance center and the baseball academy are an important part of the Regensburg baseball organization. The #LegionäreFamily recently proved with the WBC Qualifier that major tournaments are in good hands in the Armin Wolf Arena. We will do everything we can to make the U18 European Championship a real experience for players and fans.” The Student Baseball European Championship will also take place in Germany from July 2nd to 6th, 2024. The tournament will be held on the student field that was newly built last year at the Untouchables Paderborn facility. The U12 European Baseball Championship is going to Germany for the first time. The hosts start as defending champions.

Two European Championships in Germany

“We feel honored that two European Baseball Championships will take place in Germany next year,” says DBV President Jürgen Elsishans. “We have been able to celebrate some great successes in the youth sector in recent years and want to build on that in front of the local fans. Both host clubs have experience in hosting major tournaments and we are sure it will be two great events.”

Germany has already won the U12 European Baseball Championship three times – in 2016, 2022 and also 2023 – and is therefore starting as the two-time defending champion. The best results so far at the U18 European Baseball Championships have been three third places. Most recently in Italy in 2021. Both the 2024 U12 and U18 European Baseball Championships will also serve as qualification for the 2025 World Championships.
