Real Madrid – Frank Lampard about ex-BVB star Jude Bellingham: “I really wanted him”

Frank Lampard (45) revealed that he would have loved to bring Jude Bellingham to Chelsea a few years ago. The former England international worked as a coach at Stamford Bridge for the first time. Bellingham’s commitment failed due to the veto of those responsible for the Blues.

In the Obi One Podcast, Lampard said: “When I was coaching Chelsea I really wanted to bring in Jude Bellingham. But I couldn’t get the suggestion through to the board.”

The club’s sporting management found the transfer fee of around 25 million euros for the then teenager too much, Lampard continued.

The former world-class midfielder worked at Chelsea from 2019 to early 2021. At that time, Bellingham initially played for his hometown club Birmingham City. A year later, numerous top clubs were interested in him and he moved to BVB for around 30 million euros.

He developed splendidly at Borussia Dortmund and became an English senior international (27 appearances, 2 goals). After 132 games for the Black and Yellows, he moved to Real Madrid this summer for a fee of 103 million, where he got off to a dream start with 13 goals in 14 games.

Last week, the 20-year-old was awarded the Kopa Trophy for the best U21 player in the world for his performances at the Ballon d’Or gala.
