Peruvian Police Officers Ordered to Pretrial Detention for Alleged Bribery

The Superior Court of Justice of Ayacucho ordered preventive detention of nine months for Julio Joseph Romero Cavalcanti (42) and Erick Edinson Rojas Huamaní (34). Both are being investigated for their alleged participation in an act of passive bribery while carrying out their police duties.

The accused, who are part of the Highway Unit of the National Police of Peru, would have detained a motorcyclist on the Huamanga – Andahuaylas highway on September 26, 2023, for not having his documents in order.

Instead of following the standard protocol of issuing a ticket and retaining the motorcycle, they requested a bribe of 70 soles and “a whole grilled chicken” from the driver, who initially fled.

The two officers were arrested by the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office on November 2 as part of the ongoing investigation. The Deputy Provincial Prosecutor in charge of this case is Luisa Massiel Conga Palomino who requested the internment of these alleged bad police officers.
