Pelicans’ CJ McCollum Diagnosed with Partial Pneumothorax: Recovery Timeline Uncertain

The Pelicans have announced that CJ McCollum has been detected with a small pneumothorax in his right lung. This problem occurs when air leaks into the space between the lung and the chest wall, pushing on the outside of the lung and causing it to collapse, in this case only partially and not completely.

This is the second time that the guard has suffered a pneumothorax, since he was already diagnosed with one in 2021, when he was still a Blazers player. On that occasion, the franchise assured that it took two and a half weeks from the moment the diagnosis was made to fully recover, but the player remained on the sidelines for three more weeks and missed a total of 18 games.

Now, the Pelicans have assured that they will subject McCollum to more tests during the next 48 hours, in which they will be able to establish a recovery procedure and estimate a time frame for his return to the courts. The Louisiana franchise will have to learn to live for a while without the shooting guard, who at the start of the season is averaging 21.7 points and 5.7 assists.

This joins the long list of absences that the Pelicans have had to face in recent years. This season, Willie Green has still not been able to count on Trey Murphy, Jose Alvarado and Naji Marshall, and Brandon Ingram has only been able to be present in three of the six games played so far. For now, New Orleans has started with a positive balance of 4-2, but the situation is worrying given that we are already coming from a season ruined by losses.
