Pallacanestro Reggiana Last in Fouls Suffered: A Cause for Concern

Five ‘boo’s’ less than Virtus Bologna, Pesaro and Tortona but – more generally – below any other Serie A team.

Pallacanestro Reggiana is in fact last in terms of fouls suffered throughout the championship. Just 16.9 on average per match, a pittance if we think of the talent of the red and white attackers.

Even Brindisi and Treviso, still without victories and last in the class, earn more: 17.8 and 20.4 respectively. A surprising fact and which must above all fuel some reflections.

To do so with a clear mind, it is first necessary to clear the field of useless refereeing controversies: Mazzoni, Quarta and Luconi refereed badly against Tortona, using an incomprehensible standard, but this does not mean that Unahotels is not protected or that it is less protected than other teams and who knows for what logic. Although the data is ‘partial’, it could however highlight other ‘symptoms’ concerning Priftis’ troop. The very unbalanced game on the perimeter tends to mean that the great shooters available to the Greek coach are often ‘satisfied’ with a three or medium range solution rather than attacking the rim. This, like it or not, makes them ‘automatically’ less exposed to obvious contacts which historically are whistled more frequently near the basket. A trend that is further highlighted by the (almost) total absence of play in the low post or in any case in the three-second area. Beyond the quality of the individuals, it is not exactly a coincidence that Shengelia’s Virtus is at the top of the rankings (5.6 fouls suffered per match) and Pesaro with Totè is in second place (4.3). In any case, attributing all this to the lack of playing with backs to the basket would be profoundly wrong. More generally, Pallacanestro Reggiana must start to better read the situations that can bring them advantages in attack, without getting caught up in the frenzy of resolving it with a ‘forced’ shot.

Tortona, certainly over protected in the last match, from this point of view was an example of how to play on the weaknesses of others. Even character ones. In this regard, the League has notified Hervey of a one-match ban following his expulsion on Sunday against Tortona. The sanction, however, will obviously be transformed into a fine which will be paid by Pallacanestro Reggiana and the winger will be on the pitch regularly on Sunday in Venice at 4.30pm. Olisevicius’ move to Treviso is also official: the Lithuanian will make his debut on Sunday at 7pm in Pesaro.
