“One day, it’s going to hit very hard”… concussion, a new threat to sailors

The risks of serious head injuries continue to increase on ever more efficient boats that hit the waves at high speed, endangering the health of sailors.

Sometimes for small ailments, like a cough that gets worse, but also for more serious alerts, as was the case last Monday. On the line, the teammate of a sailor injured in the back of the head after a violent impact on a winch while he was in the middle of a packing session, a maneuver which consists of rebalancing the gear on the boat to make it more efficient. “He had a wound the size of two euros. I had to treat remotely by making do with the photos that were sent to me but fortunately no concussion was detected.», he explains after subjecting the skipper to a concussion protocol. The same as those used on rugby pitches after a big clash between two players.
