Olympic Champion Alexander Zverev Accused of Physical Abuse: Tennis Star Rejects Allegations and Faces Penalty Order

The Tiergarten district court has issued a penalty order against Olympic champion Alexander Zverev: The 26-year-old is accused of physically abusing a woman. Zverev rejects the allegations.

As a justice spokeswoman confirmed on Tuesday, Zverev should pay a fine of 450,000 euros for bodily harm. With the penalty order, the district court followed an application from the Berlin public prosecutor’s office: The district court had requested a fine of 90 daily rates of 5,000 euros each.

Zverev is accused of physically abusing a woman during an argument in May 2020; she appears as a co-plaintiff. As the court spokeswoman explained, the tennis star has already lodged an objection against the penalty order. After a hearing, a trial will probably take place.

Zverev is presumed innocent until he is legally convicted.

A press release from Zverev’s lawyers on Tuesday said: “Mr. Zverev rejects the accusation made against him. The complainant’s allegations, which alone form the basis for the penalty order, have already been refuted by a forensic medical report from the recognized Berlin forensic doctor Prof. Dr. Tsokos, Charité Berlin .” And further: “The procedure is scandalous, there can be no question of a fair, constitutional procedure. Mr. Zverev will take action against this using all means possible.”

Zverev himself commented on the accusation in July. At that time he said: “From my side: I completely reject the allegations. My lawyers are taking care of the matter. I won’t say anything more about it.”
