Next out-of-court settlement – sports

After the payment in the abuse scandal to the former diver Jan Hempel, the German Swimming Association (DSV) also reached an out-of-court settlement in the dispute with its former competitive sports director Thomas Kurschilgen. The DSV confirmed this to the sports information service upon request. The ARD Sportschau had previously reported that Kurschilgen, like Hempel, was receiving a cash payment. Kurschilgen was first released from his duties at the DSV in February and then terminated without notice because he allegedly did not adequately investigate reports of suspected cases of abuse. Kurschilgen took action against this before the Kassel regional court, and the proceedings have now been ended. At the end of October, Hempel received an immediate payment of 300,000 euros from DSV and will receive the same amount over the next ten years. The four-time European champion and 1996 Olympic silver medalist accused his now deceased coach of years of sexual abuse in the ARD documentary “Abused” in the summer of 2022 and later announced a lawsuit for millions.
