Bad news for the Dutch national team: In the two crucial European Championship qualifiers against Ireland (Saturday, 8:45 p.m.) and in Gibraltar (Tuesday, 8:45 p.m., both LIVE! on kicker), Oranje will have to do without Bayer Leverkusen winger Jeremie Frimpong, who is suffering from a muscle injury suffered.
The fast winger had to stop training on Thursday due to injury. The Dutch association did not disclose what exactly was plaguing Frimpong. There is therefore no exact duration of the downtime. A detailed investigation will take place in Leverkusen on Friday. Bond coach Ronald Koeman has already nominated Jordan Teze from PSV Eindhoven.
It is clear that the Dutch could have used Frimpong in this form. The 22-year-old has played a key role in Leverkusen’s strong season so far (first place in the Bundesliga, 31 out of 33 possible points from the first eleven games). In eleven Bundesliga games, Frimpong scored three goals and prepared six more goals. Together with Alejandro Grimaldo, he forms an extremely dangerous wing for the Werkself with a lot going on.
Orange still needs a win
Without the man from Leverkusen, Oranje now has to book the European Championship ticket. The Dutch have twelve points after six games, the same as Greece, which has already played seven games. At the top of the table are the French, who have already qualified for the European Championships.
However, Koeman’s team has everything in their own hands thanks to the important 1-0 win in Greece in mid-October. Since the direct comparison against the Greeks was won, a three-pointer from the remaining two group games is enough for the Netherlands to take part in the 2024 European Championships in Germany.
