Julian Nagelsmann provides another clue as to how he is planning for the home European Championships next summer. The national coach announces his squad for the international matches against Turkey and Austria. Due to the injury to Bayern star Musiala, he had to reschedule.

Julian Nagelsmann is bringing two more unexpected debutants into the national football team for the last international matches of the year. The national coach nominated attacker Marvin Ducksch from Werder Bremen and goalkeeper Janis Blaswich from RB Leipzig for the first time in his 27-player squad for his home premiere against Turkey on November 18th in Berlin and the duel against Austria in Vienna three days later.

“He didn’t have an easy start with Werder. But he now has a very good rating again and has stabilized Bremen again through his performances. That’s always a good sign,” Nagelsmann said about Ducksch: “If you score 20 goals at a top club, that’s less highly rated than if you score a lot of goals or provide assists at a not-so-top-rated club. He shoots very good standards and has a good finish on goal.”

For Ducksch, the national team will see him again with his former Bremen strike partner Niclas Füllkrug, who went to Borussia Dortmund in the summer. “He knows abundance very, very well. That is certainly a component that can help us,” said Nagelsmann. He “just wanted to have a second or third real striker with us on the way to the European Championships. And we have three, four, five candidates for that.” Ducksch “also brings in a good level of craziness, which we also need, especially when players come off the bench,” explained the national coach. “Then that can be very, very valuable.”

Blaswich as the second debutant is rewarded by Nagelsmann for his recent very good performances in the goal of RB Leipzig. “Janis is a goalkeeper who is a good footballer but is also very strong on the line and has a good charisma,” said Nagelsmann about the 32-year-old goalkeeper. The former RB coach “never got to know Blaswich personally, only as an opponent, and he was positively crazy after the game and was extremely upset when they didn’t win. “That always really impressed me, the way he stood back there.”

Leno, Raum and Behrens sorted out

The recently injured Serge Gnabry from FC Bayern and Leipzig’s Benjamin Henrichs as well as Dortmund’s Felix Nmecha also belong to the DFB group again. Nagelsmann has to do without young Bayern star Jamal Musiala because of his muscle injury.

Because of Musiala’s departure, this time there is no youngster double with Florian Wirtz in the attacking midfield center of the national team, which was impressive against the USA (3:1) and Mexico (2:2) in October. Even if Nagelsmann always emphasizes the “here and now” in which he wants to move, he no longer has many test options before the European Championships. The international double pack is the penultimate date before the tournament squad is nominated in May. Before that there are only the two test games in March, for which the DFB will announce the opponents after the European Championship draw on December 2nd.

In comparison to the national coach’s debut in October against the USA and Mexico, this time goalkeeper Bernd Leno (FC Fulham), defensive player David Raum (RB Leipzig) and striker Kevin Behrens (Union Berlin) are no longer in the squad. RB attacker Timo Werner, Nico Schlotterbeck and his ailing BVB colleague Emre Can were again not taken into account. In contrast to Behrens, the October newcomers Chris Führich and Robert Andrich are allowed to audition again among the European Championship candidates.

Nagelsmann is planning to work with Neuer next year

“I’m absolutely looking forward to these two games. For it to be emotional and loud. There will also be many Turkish fans in the stadium in Berlin. And against Austria it is a neighborhood duel, a prestigious duel in a beautiful city and in a very historic stadium. It will certainly be an extraordinary atmosphere and an important game for us in Vienna too. There are two tests that we want to use and that are focused on emotionality,” said Nagelsmann when the squad was announced on Friday.

He also expects Manuel Neuer to return to the national team in March. “We all hope that he plays extremely consistently until the next international match. Then the signs are different again,” said the national coach. It was “a mutual decision” and he had had “very good contact” with Neuer over the past few months, said Nagelsmann about the 2014 world champion goalkeeper. “He informed me about every little step in his development – which I also wanted. Even in the weight room, when he made progress, I was informed.”

Neuer suffered a serious broken leg after the World Cup in Qatar at the end of 2022 and only celebrated his comeback in the goal of the record champions at the end of October. The 37-year-old had announced that Nagelsmann would do without him. “We had a very good conversation where he explained how he felt. “Where I explained what my thoughts were,” said Nagelsmann, justifying the waiver with an increased risk of injury.

“After such a serious injury, it’s always like this: you come back (…), then the first few games are very, very good,” said the national coach. And then there is a “small hole where there is a certain risk of muscular injury. This hole could happen now (…) We are very, very happy that he has the opportunity to get the break. And then he will continue to play just as stable. The impression was very, very good.”
