National Coach Criticizes Poor Scheduling by ITF and WTA

“We had flights here every day for her. Now we have to see how she gets away this evening so that she can be here tomorrow on Tuesday,” said national coach Barbara Rittner to the “SID”: “Of course we need her, and not just that in doubles, but also in singles normally.”

Rittner clearly criticizes the scheduling of the responsible associations: “It’s once again a tragedy that the players suffer from the fact that the ITF and WTA cannot coordinate better,” said the 50-year-old: “Brutal, really not over the years “You really have to clearly attack the leadership of the two associations.”

The Australian Ellen Perez, who together with the American Nicole Melichar-Martinez is the final opponent of Siegemund and her Russian partner Vera Zvonareva in Cancun, had already denounced a “date disaster” on X (formerly Twitter). Perez was supposed to be in action for Australia on Tuesday, the first day of the Billie Jean King Cup. But this will not be possible.

At Siegemund, who on Sunday evening became the first German tennis player since Claudia Kohde-Kilsch to reach the doubles final at the WTA finals 36 years ago, team captain Rainer Schüttler has hope despite the expected jet lag and exhaustion.

Rittner is constantly in contact with the Swabian and praised her performance: “She rewards herself for all her energy, ambition and discipline and is an absolute role model of what you can get out of yourself.”
