A human rights strategy for the 2024 European Football Championship in Germany – that is a novelty, but a very laudable one. But the practical benefits still have to be seen.

Timing is everything. November 14, 2022: The German Football Association team sets off into the debacle called the World Cup. November 14, 2023: The revenge of the Federal Minister of the Interior. Sure, that’s a tiny bit fanciful, but there’s no room for contextualizing excesses at this point.

Football is a results sport: Qatar, one-love own goal, end of the day. But now: The human rights strategy for the home European Championships, presented 365 days after the start of the tragedy. Germany’s European Championship should be the opposite in every respect. Promised and signed by everyone, absolutely everyone, even UEFA.

That is very commendable. Never existed. But is well-intentioned well-done? The practical benefit must be shown. Ceterum censeo: Other locations are far more important for the federal government’s human rights record.
