MLB owners approve Oakland A’s move to Las Vegas
Major League Baseball (MLB) owners voted Thursday to move the Oakland Athletics to Las Vegas, paving the way for the second relocation of a baseball team in the last 50 years.
The move, which comes after more than two decades of failed attempts to get a new stadium in the city to replace the aging Oakland Coliseum, required the support of three-quarters of the teams at the quarterly owners’ meeting. He received unanimous support despite unanswered questions about the team’s near-term future and stadium plans.
Some legal proceedings are still pending, which could complicate the construction of a new baseball stadium on the Strip in Sin City. Yet no one really seems to worry about it. In a few years, Oakland will therefore find itself without any professional sports teams. Earlier, the Raiders, the NFL team, also left for Las Vegas.
Four World Series
Before the Montreal Expos moved to Washington, D.C. in 2005, the last MLB team to move was the Washington Senators, who became the Texas Rangers in 1972. The A’s left Kansas City for Oakland in 1968 and won four World Series in 55 years of presence in the city.
