Minnesota Timberwolves: Surprising Success and Future Possibilities

The Minnesota Timberwolves are being one of the positive surprises of the season. After 14 games played, they occupy first position in the Western Conference with a record of 11-3. Two of these defeats, against Toronto and Atlanta, occurred in the first three games of the season and, since then, they have compiled eleven victories in the last 12 games.

In addition to the defense, the best in the entire NBA, one of the main architects of this success is Mike Conley. At 36 years of age, the point guard is directing the Timberwolves ship at a high level. His ball care is being remarkable, as evidenced by the barely 0.8 turnovers per game that he compiles, the best figure of his career. In fact, only Tyus Jones (6.8), who has been dominating this section for five years, has a better ratio between assists and turnovers than him (6.73).

The only problem is that he is in the last year of his contract and the financial situation is very delicate in Minnesota. However, Conley will make it easier to remain linked to the franchise, because, at this point in his career, he does not want to pack his bags for another franchise after having left Salt Lake City this year.

More NBANobody warned Marcus Smart

“Why not chase him here [la búsqueda de un campeonato]”, while my family adapts and settles, instead of having to move three or four more times before I retire?” declared the veteran player, according to the media The Athletic. «And I have no guarantee that I can win anywhere else I go. So why not do it next to people who love you, respect you and treat you this way? This organization is trying to go in that direction.”

If the Timberwolves fail this season, it would simplify some important roster decisions in the short and medium term. However, if the current group continues to demonstrate that it is capable of playing at a high level, the future of the franchise will maintain its current course, despite the large outlay that will be caused by the contract of players such as Anthony Edwards, Rudy Gobert, Karl-Anthony Towns and Jaden McDaniels.
