Major League Baseball Team Owners Approve Relocation of Oakland Athletics to Las Vegas

The bitter day finally arrived for Oakland Athletics fans after Major League Baseball (MLB) team owners approved relocating the historic franchise to Las Vegas. The votes were held today after several meetings throughout the week.

I know this is a terrible day for the fans in Oakland. I understand that and that is why we have always had a policy of doing everything humanly possible to avoid relocation,” said Commissioner Rob Manfred. “I really think we did it in this case.. “I think it is beyond debate that the status quo in Oakland was unsustainable.”

I am absolutely convinced that there was no viable path forward in Oakland. We hope to be in Las Vegas; There is tremendous support locally for having the A’s there. We believe that in the long term Las Vegas will be a great asset for Major League Baseball,” Manfred added.

In addition to the baseball team, little by little the city of Oakland has been left empty in terms of sports teams. The NFL’s Raiders had already left for Las Vegas before, while the Golden State Warriors crossed the bridge a few years ago by having a new home in San Francisco.

Sin City is now a sports paradise

This way Las Vegas is confirmed as the new “sports paradise”, with the Raiders in the NFL, the double WNBA champion Las Vegas Aces; and the Las Vegas Golden Knights, current NHL ice hockey champions who were the first major professional team in the city.

In addition, in “Sin City” the Super Bowl will be played this February, Formula 1 is racing for the first time in about four decades this week and of course it has featured over time the biggest international boxing events and the MMA.

When will the A’s start playing in Las Vegas?

Recall that the A’s reached an agreement for a new stadium in Las Vegas in May, paving the way for the club to officially request the relocation. Nevada’s local legislature and governor had previously approved up to $380 million in public financing for the $1.5 billion stadium.

It’s not yet known where the A’s will play after their lease at the Oakland Coliseum ends at the end of 2024, but In Las Vegas they are scheduled to play until 2028date on which the new stadium must open its doors.
