Lisa Grabner Secures Third European Championship Medal in Judo

Already the third European Championship medal for the Wimpassing judo talent

The 22-year-old Lower Austrian Lisa GRABNER from JC Wimpassing Sparkasse, most recently the silver medalist at the World Cup in Sarajevo, also had legitimate hopes of winning a medal at the European Championships U23 in Potsdam (GER). The youngest athlete from head coach Adi Zeltner’s successful team showed once again that she can also be on the podium in continental title fights in the -57kg class.
Lisa was very focused from the start and was extremely effective in all of her fights. The HSZ-Seebenstein athlete initially prevailed with Ippon against Merit TARKUS/EST. In the quarterfinals against the strong Pole Paulina ZEMLA, who had previously knocked out the top-seeded Azerbaijani Fidan ALIZADA, the Wimpassinger only needed 1 minute and 30 seconds to leave the mat as the winner with Ippon for Uchi-mata (inner thigh throw).
Lisa had an equal opponent waiting for her in the semi-finals: former EYOF winner and U18 World Championships third-place finisher Elin HENNINGER/NED. The Austrian also sought the decision herself in this fight and took the lead in the first minute of the fight with Wazaari (half point) for Sumi Gaeshi (self-falling technique). However, the Dutchwoman was able to equalize the lead and finally prevailed with an armbar in the golden score overtime. Henninger then secured the European championship title and Grabner met Daniela TCACI/MDA in the bronze final that followed. In this fight, the Wimpassinger clearly prevailed again and defeated her opponent with Ippon after two Wazaari scores for Sumi Gaeshi after about 2 minutes of fighting time.
Lisa Grabner not only secured the only ÖJV medal at this U23 European Championship, but after bronze in 2018 in the U18 in Sarajevo and bronze in 2021 in the U21 in Luxembourg, she now won her third European Championship medal with bronze in 2023 in the U23 in Potsdam.
“I woke up with the feeling that today I’m going to tear the world down. I actually shouldn’t have let go of my lead against Henninger in the semifinals. I was momentarily inattentive. But of course, ultimately the joy of precious metal outweighs everything. The fact that I’m now winning my third European Championship medal after youth and juniors in the U23 is really cool, especially because I was injured for four months this year, first on my finger, then on my knee – including an operation,” he said, visibly happy makes the young talent easier.
… next goals: “This year in December I will be attending the Open European Championships in Kosovo (only for the two weight classes -57kg and -73kg) with club colleague Lukas Reiter and base trainer Adi Zeltner, where high prize money is offered for places 1-5, deny. My next goal is to place there. And next year I want to achieve top 7 results on the World Tour.”
