Laura Siegemund at the WTA Finals in the doubles final in Cancun in Mexico

Tennis player Laura Siegemund reached the final in the doubles competition at the WTA Finals. The 35-year-old Swabian won the final group game against the US duo Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula in the match tiebreak with 3:6, 6:4, 10:8 on Sunday in Cancun, Mexico, alongside Russian Vera Swonarewa. A few hours later, the duo moved into the final with a 3:6, 6:3, 10:5 win against Elise Mertens from Belgium and Storm Hunter from Australia.

Due to the chaotic weather conditions in Cancun, the group game had to be interrupted the day before. The final, like the singles final, will now take place this Monday (7:30 p.m. CET). Siegemund from Metzingen is the first German tennis player since Claudia Kohde-Kilsch 36 years ago to reach the doubles final at the WTA Finals. In the final, the US Open finalists will face Ellen Perez from Australia and the American Nicole Melichar-Martinez.

Iga Swiatek in the final against Pegula

Kohde-Kilsch always failed in the finals of the season finals from 1985 to 1987 alongside Czech Helena Sukova. The Saarlander had previously lost the doubles final at the end of the year tournament in 1983 with Eva Pfaff from Frankfurt. Since the doubles were first held at the season finale 50 years ago, no German has won the title.

Iga Swiatek also reached the final of the WTA finals late and will play against Jessica Pegula for the title and status as world number one on Monday (10:30 p.m. CET). The 22-year-old Pole beat Aryna Sabalenka from Belarus, currently number one in the world, 6:3, 6:2 in the semifinals on Sunday.

This game was also interrupted after four games on Saturday due to the constant showers in Mexico and continued on Sunday. Swiatek was able to adapt better to the circumstances and quickly moved ahead to 4:1. In the final against the American Pegula, which has been postponed until Monday, Siwatek can now win the title in the season finale for the first time and also move back to first place in the world rankings.
