Las Vegas Raiders Sign Linebacker Jaylon Smith After Firing Head Coach and General Manager

A little more than 24 hours after the firings of head coach Josh McDaniels and general manager Dave Ziegler, the Las Vegas Raiders have signed linebacker Jaylon Smith.

Smith visited the Raiders over the summer, but eventually signed with the New Orleans Saints, with whom he played on the practice squad.

To make room for Smith, the Raiders released cornerback David Long who was signed last offseason. He started one game and made 12 tackles this season.

The Raiders are currently without several linebackers. Starter Divine Deablo missed the last game against the Lions with an ankle injury. He missed Wednesday’s practice, as did Robert Spillane (hand) and Luke Masterson (concussion).

Kana’i Mauga was recently placed on injured reserve, leaving rookie Amari Burney and special teams specialist Curtis Bolton as the only healthy linebackers on the Raiders’ 53-man roster.

A 2nd round pick in 2016, Smith played for the Cowboys, Packers and Giants before joining the Saints.

He has 642 tackles in the NFL, in addition to being elected to the Pro Bowl during his 3rd season with the Cowboys.
