“A big pinch of disappointment” – 2:3 against Türkiye in Nagelsmann’s home premiere

National coach Julian Nagelsmann criticized the attitude of the national soccer team after the 2-3 defeat against Turkey on his home debut. “We didn’t have the emotionality in all positions,” said the DFB head coach. WELT reporter Dirk Schommertz recaps the international match.

Kenan Yildiz is one of the Turkish protagonists who dealt a severe setback to the German national team. The center forward was trained at FC Bayern and now plays for Juventus. Only the German association never approached him.

In the second minute of stoppage time in the first half, Kenan Yildiz not only made it 2-1 for Turkey with a remarkable goal and caused quite a stir. He also aroused interest because of his appearance, as he was born in Regensburg and trained at FC Bayern. The latter in a position that has been causing problems for German football for years – that of the center forward.

Yildiz showed a strong performance on Saturday evening. Quite a few supporters of the German team may have wondered whether those responsible at the DFB might have given the attacker, who now plays for Juventus Turin, because, it is said, he apparently saw better opportunities for his development there than with the German record champions Have you overlooked acquisition?

Julian Nagelsmann, the national coach, said before the duel with Turkey: “It’s not an issue where you should talk the player into it, that’s my belief. It is a very personal decision, the motives of which cannot be assessed as an outsider.” A statement that surprises the Yildiz side. According to the motto: Should the players actively apply to the association if they don’t hear anything or don’t receive an invitation for international matches?

The DFB never contacted Yildiz. In an interview with BILD, Yildiz said on this topic: “My mother is German, my father is Turkish. I’ve played for Turkey since U17 and I’m very proud of that. Germany never approached me, never contacted me. That’s why the option didn’t exist, the question didn’t arise. I am very happy to play for Turkey.”

He played his first competitive game for Turkey in the Nations League against Croatia. When the score was 1-0, he was on the pitch for four minutes. His first starting eleven appearance followed on Saturday. Since Yildiz is under 21, a change of association before a third game would theoretically be possible. However, the case law is different here and there is even a risk of a ban. But Yildiz won’t let things get that far. Apparently there is no interest in changing the association. In Turkey he has been on everyone’s lips since Saturday.

Before the game against Germany, Yilidz told BILD: “I would have dealt with a request, but there was no call from the DFB. But I didn’t think about it much, I just kept an eye on my path.” He said he was proud and grateful when he was nominated. “The jersey from my first game will hang framed on the wall at home in the future.”

After missing out on a striker, the DFB still has the chance to win another top German-Turkish talent for the DFB: Can Uzun (18), who like Yildiz was born in Regensburg and has both citizenships, plays in Nuremberg. Uzun is already one of the top strikers in the second division, his market value on transfermarkt.de is already five million euros. He has been called up for the Turkish U-team but has not yet committed to a senior team. Unlike with Yildiz, the DFB is supposed to be trying everything in the background with Uzun to win the player for the association.

Former Bundesliga professional Hamit Altintop, who played for FC Bayern among others and is now a board member at the Turkish association, told “Bild”: “Kenan is very down-to-earth, hard-working. We have been working together for three years and he is looked after very well. Players must choose an association out of conviction. We have shown that we stand by Kenan. We respect every decision. On Saturday Ilkay Gündogan wore the armband for Germany – and that’s totally fine.”

Nevertheless, the DFB should perhaps pick up the phone one too many times when it comes to the next top talent from Turkey.
