Jonathan Christie said after being eliminated by Viktor Axelsen

Jonatan Christie lost at the hands of Viktor Axelsen in the quarter-finals of the Japan Masters 2023. Jojo hopes to play better and beat Axelsen in the next tournament!

This was stated by the 2023 French Open champion following his defeat to the world number one men’s singles in the quarter-finals of the Japan Masters, Friday (17/11/2023).

Jonatan Christie lost the rubber game duel to Axelsen with a score of 21-15, 18-21, 9-21 in the match which took place at the Kumamoto Prefectual Gymnasium, Japan, in 72 minutes.

“Praise God, even though the results were not as expected, today I played much better and I admit that Viktor also played very well. He doesn’t give up easily, even though he was behind in the second game, he kept trying,” said Jonatan in a quick quote via PBSI.

“At the start of the first game I played quite well and it seemed like my opponent was playing a little less comfortably. But in the second game it was a shame because from the first game the match was very intense, not only from the game but also from the mind. So it wasn’t easy because we know Viktor is experienced player and he is the best player at the moment,” he explained.

“Earlier I was ahead 15-14 in the second game. But from the intensity of how I use my strokes and strategy on the field, maybe people don’t know that my thoughts and mentality in the second game also had an influence on my game. The result in the third game, my feeling was still like that. second game,” said Jonathan.

In the last three meetings with Axelsen this year, Jonatan Christie was the first time he was able to win a game.

Last time, a tight three-game match was presented at the Malaysia Open 2022. Despite losing, Jonatan managed to take a winning point in the second game 15-21, 22-20, 11-21.

“There are several lessons that I can learn from this defeat. Hopefully in the future I can get even better results. From here I can learn more so that in the future I can put up a better fight and win,” said Jonathan.
